The human resource management procedure of an organization can significantly influence the operations of an organization. Human resource management has different aspects like recruitment, performance management, training and development, employee motivation, reward management and so on. Effective human resource management process of an organization ensures that enough talented people have been recruited within the organization and their skills and competencies can be utilized properly for managing the operations of the organization effectively (Madera et al. 2017). From this perspective, it can be said that the operational efficiency, the service quality and the overall performance of an organization largely depend on the human resource management process of an organization. For this reason, the managers and leaders of an organization need to have sufficient knowledge regarding the tools and techniques of managing human resource effectively so that they can manage the overall performance of the organization (Boella and Goss-Turner, 2019). The hotel industry of the UK has a significant contribution to the economic growth of the country.
As per current statistics, almost 3% of the GDP of the United Kingdom is generated by the hotel industry (House of Commons Library, 2023). However, the hotel industry faces some serious human resource management challenges and therefore, therefore, the employee turnover rates in many of the renowned hotels of the United Kingdom are high enough. Diversity issues, workplace discrimination issues, lack of employee motivation and other issues often have a significant negative impact on the satisfaction level of the employees (Chams and García-Blandón, 2019). As a result of it, the hotels also face difficulties in managing the performance of the employees and the performance issues of the employees can adversely affect the quality of the customer services in those hotels. Specially, majority of the hotels in the United Kingdom usually recruit people from different cultural backgrounds considering their skills and competencies but in many hotels the managers do not have the required knowledge and skills of managing diverse workforce (Ashton, 2018). Therefore, they often cannot manage the cultural conflicts and the diversity issues and the human resource management policies and procedures are also not developed considering the cultural differences between the employees.
Along with that, effective tools of employee motivation and performance management are not used due to the lack of knowledge regarding international human resource management procedures. As a result of it, it becomes difficult for the hotels to keep the employees satisfied and to manage their performance. As the hotels cannot retain the highly skilled employees due to ineffective human resource management process and various HRM related issues, it also becomes difficult for them to deliver good quality services to the guests (Nieves and Quintana, 2018). From this perspective, it can be said that the human resource managers and the departmental managers of the large hotels in the United Kingdom need to study human resource management in order to enhance their knowledge regarding the processes of managing employee performance, managing workplace issues and various other aspects of human resource management so that they can apply their knowledge for managing the performance of the employees.
