US foreign policy has traditionally been one of Liberal internationalism. In an unstable world where democracy and liberalism are being challenged by the growing power of China, how can liberal internationalism continue to guide us Foreign Policy?

The foundation of American foreign policy over decades comprises liberal internationalism, that combines democratic principles with international cooperation through institutions. The ideas of liberal internationalism may still play an essential part in defining US foreign relations in a volatile environment where liberty and democracy face threats from the growing strength of China and other trends. Keeping liberal internationalism at the helm of American foreign policy may be done in the following ways:

Promoting and protecting the principles of democracy, including human rights including the rule underpinning law, is a central tenet of liberal internationalism. The United States may demonstrate its continued devotion to these ideals via its international activities by safeguarding and bolstering democratic organizations, civil society organizations, and the freedom of the press. Doing so would show the world that the United States is serious about its commitment to democratic government and make it an example for other countries to follow.

As a response to global problems, liberal internationalists advocate for strengthening existing international institutions. The United Nations, the “World Trade Organisation”, and the World Health Organisation are all flawed organizations that facilitate communication, collaboration, and the creation of new standards. To guarantee that these structures continue to serve their purposes and accurately reflect liberal democracies, the United States may continue to work with and improve them.

Establishing and fostering coalitions based on similar principles and mutual interests is a central tenet of liberal internationalism. To enhance security, and prosperity, and respect liberal values, the United States may engage closely alongside like-minded nations, especially those that advocate democratic ideals. The United States can strengthen its position as a worldwide champion for liberal ideals by strengthening its current relationships and forging new ones.

Participation in the Global Economy: Liberal internationalism acknowledges the value of trade liberalization, open economies, and economic interconnectedness in fostering global peace and economic growth. The United States can keep working for free and open trade governed by regulations that safeguard the rights of innovators, workers, and the health of the planet. The United States can oppose China’s financial dominance and advance liberal internationalist values by setting a precedent of ethical economic practice at home.

Liberal internationalism requires the United States to promote technical leadership and collaboration in the midst of technological rivalry and obstacles. The United States can guarantee that technology promotes rather than undermines liberal principles through funding R&D, encouraging digital confidentiality and safety, and partnering with partners to set shared standards.

When it comes to tackling problems on a global scale, liberal internationalism understands the need for coordinated efforts. Through multilateral collaboration, such as the “Paris Agreement on climate change”, terrorist alliances, and global health efforts, the United States can continue to take the lead in addressing these issues. The United States may reinforce liberal internationalist values and show the world the value of international cooperation by actively participating in the solution to worldwide problems.

Recognizing the need for strategic thinking and adaptability is essential for keeping liberal internationalism relevant in today’s world. The United States should be aware of the changing nature of the world’s power relations and pursue ways that are both idealistic and grounded in reality. In doing so, the United States may maintain its role as a leader in advancing human rights, democracy, and the ideals upon which liberal democracies are founded via liberal internationalism.
